About the Film
The Punisher: One Last Kill is a 2026 American television special from Marvel Studios and Marvel Television, released on Disney+. Reinaldo Marcus Green directed the special and co-wrote it with Jon Bernthal, who returns as Frank Castle, the vigilante known as the Punisher.
The story takes place after Castle has completed his revenge against those responsible for his family’s deaths. Having put away his Punisher equipment, he tries to distance himself from the life he has led. That becomes difficult when Ma Gnucci, head of the Gnucci Crime Family, seeks revenge and places a bounty on him.
Running approximately 51 minutes, the special was released on Disney+ on May 12, 2026. It continues Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle, which began with Daredevil and continued through The Punisher and Daredevil: Born Again.
Plot Summary
Frank Castle has reached a point where his original mission as the Punisher is essentially complete. After killing members of the Gnucci Crime Family who were connected to his family’s murder, he puts away his weapons and attempts to live a quieter life.
Castle’s past continues to follow him. While living in New York City’s Little Sicily neighborhood, he experiences visions involving people from his life, including his daughter Lisa, his former military friend Curtis Hoyle, and Karen Page.
His situation changes when Ma Gnucci seeks revenge for the deaths of her husband and sons. She places a bounty on Castle, bringing a group of criminals into the neighborhood in search of him.
When the attackers reach Castle’s apartment building, he is forced to fight again. Although he has the opportunity to continue pursuing Gnucci, Castle ultimately turns his attention toward protecting local shopkeeper Dre, Dre’s wife Debbie, and their daughter Charli.
The conflict leaves Castle facing a different question from the one that originally drove him: what should he do with his life after his campaign of revenge has ended?
Main Characters
Frank Castle / Punisher
Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, the former Marine who became the Punisher after the murder of his family.
By the beginning of One Last Kill, Castle has already carried out much of the revenge that defined his life as a vigilante. His struggle is therefore less about finding another target and more about deciding whether he can leave the Punisher behind.
The visions of people from his past reinforce that conflict and connect the special to relationships established during his earlier appearances.
Ma Gnucci
Judith Light plays Ma Gnucci, the head of the Gnucci Crime Family.
She becomes Castle’s main antagonist after seeking revenge for the deaths of members of her family. Her role also provides the special with its strongest connection to the comic-book story that inspired it.
Karen Page
Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Karen Page. Page previously encountered Castle during Daredevil and later appeared in The Punisher.
In One Last Kill, she appears to Castle as a vision, connecting his present struggle to his earlier life.
Curtis Hoyle
Jason R. Moore returns as Curtis Hoyle, Castle’s former military friend from The Punisher. Like Karen Page, Hoyle appears as part of Castle’s visions rather than as a conventional participant in the present-day conflict.
Comic Book Connection
The Punisher originated in Marvel Comics as Frank Castle, a character whose war against organized crime began after his family was murdered. He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, created by writer Gerry Conway and artists Ross Andru and John Romita Sr.
For One Last Kill, the most direct comic-book influence is The Punisher vol. 5, published from 2000 to 2001 and written by Garth Ennis, with art by Steve Dillon and Jimmy Palmiotti. The series was later collected as The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank.
The special draws particularly from Ma Gnucci, who was introduced in that comic series. In the film, she is the head of the Gnucci Crime Family and the person responsible for putting a bounty on Castle.
The story is not a direct screen adaptation of the comic. Instead, it takes the Gnucci character and elements associated with the comic and places them within the continuing story of Bernthal’s version of Frank Castle.
That distinction is important to the special’s place within the Punisher mythology. Its comic-book influence comes primarily through the antagonist and the source material’s broader premise, while the character relationships and history surrounding Castle come from the MCU’s earlier television productions.
Production and Development
The special originated with an idea from Jon Bernthal during production of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. Bernthal developed a story centered on Frank Castle and was subsequently asked by Marvel Studios to pitch the project.
Marvel Studios announced the special in February 2025, with Reinaldo Marcus Green attached to direct and co-write the screenplay with Bernthal. Green and Bernthal had previously worked together on King Richard and We Own This City.
Bernthal’s involvement went beyond returning to the role. His co-writing credit gave him a direct role in shaping the story and the continuation of Castle’s character.
Filming took place in New York City during July and August 2025. Robert Elswit served as cinematographer, Melissa Lawson Cheung edited the special, and Kris Bowers composed the score.
The production also used military consultants with experience in the U.S. military, including former Marine Raiders Nick Koumalatsos and Cody Alford and U.S. Army Special Forces member Colton Hill.
Marvel Cinematic Universe Connection
The Punisher: One Last Kill is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the third Marvel Studios Special Presentation. It continues the version of Frank Castle played by Jon Bernthal since his first appearance in the second season of Daredevil in 2016.
Bernthal subsequently led The Punisher, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. He later returned as Castle in Daredevil: Born Again, bringing the character back into the MCU’s ongoing continuity.
The special follows that established version of Castle rather than introducing a new interpretation or retelling his origin. Its returning characters reinforce the connection to his earlier television history, particularly Karen Page and Curtis Hoyle.
Its story is also connected to Daredevil: Born Again, placing One Last Kill within the same broader continuity rather than treating it as a standalone reboot of the character.
As a Marvel Studios Special Presentation, the production also occupies a different format from the earlier The Punisher television series. Its shorter running time allows the story to focus on a specific point in Castle’s life: what happens when the revenge mission that created the Punisher is no longer driving him.
