Superman (2025): James Gunn’s Hopeful Reboot of the Man of Steel

The iconic red cape soars once again as James Gunn brings his unique vision to “Superman,” the 2025 film that officially launches the new DC Universe (DCU). This fresh take on the beloved character marks a significant departure from previous iterations, promising a blend of heartfelt storytelling and spectacular superhero action that has become Gunn’s signature style.

A New Beginning for the Man of Steel

Released on July 11, 2025, “Superman” represents more than just another superhero movie—it’s the foundational film of an entirely new cinematic universe. Written and directed by James Gunn, who co-heads DC Studios, the film serves as both a standalone origin-in-spirit and a narrative reset for the character. After the mixed reception of previous DC films, Gunn was tasked with reimagining the Man of Steel for a new generation while honoring the character’s rich history.

The journey to this point wasn’t straightforward. Before the release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout in July 2018, director Christopher McQuarrie and Henry Cavill had pitched their take on a new Superman film, partially inspired by the animated film Up (2009), but Warner Bros. did not pursue the idea. Later in 2018, the studio asked James Gunn to write and direct a Superman film, but he was uncertain if he wanted to take on the character.

The Story: Heritage vs. Humanity

At its core, “Superman” tells the story of Kal-El’s journey to reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. The film frames Superman’s struggle as less about proving strength and more about earning trust in a world wary of unchecked authority.

As the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, Superman finds himself in a world that views these values as old-fashioned. When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good.

Gunn’s approach emphasizes ideological rather than purely physical opposition: compassion versus control, transparency versus dominance. This philosophical conflict adds depth to the traditional superhero narrative, exploring what it means to be a symbol of hope in a cynical world.

The Cast: New Faces for Familiar Roles

David Corenswet steps into the iconic role of Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman, bringing a fresh energy to the character. Director James Gunn said Corenswet’s Superman is around 25 years old, making him more established than Tom Welling’s version from the CW series Smallville (2001–2011) but younger than Henry Cavill’s version in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, the intrepid Daily Planet reporter who shares a unique connection with Superman. Nicholas Hoult portrays the villainous Lex Luthor, described by Gunn as having “true sentiment” for the creature he created when he was just 12 years old.

The supporting cast includes Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl. Additional cast members include Skyler Gisondo as photographer Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, and Sean Gunn as businessman Maxwell Lord.

Visual Style and Tone

Visually and tonally, “Superman” draws inspiration from classic comic storytelling, favoring color, clarity, and emotional directness. The film incorporates elements that have rarely been seen in previous Superman movies, including the flying dog Krypto, giant Kaiju, pocket universes, and a blend of science and sorcery reminiscent of the old Max Fleischer cartoons.

Gunn’s direction brings a sense of sincerity and hope to the character, cutting from the same cloth as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in its pure, most sincere approach. The ensemble characters—including fellow heroes and Daily Planet colleagues—expand the world without overwhelming the narrative, setting the foundation for a shared cinematic universe while keeping the focus on Superman’s moral journey.

Reception and Critical Response

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its heartfelt approach to the character. Rotten Tomatoes noted that the film succeeds in “fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion’s big, beating heart front and center,” describing it as a Superman who “flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.”

One reviewer on Letterboxd described it as “genuine delight to my eyes” and praised “the lived in superhero world and with the way Gunn teases the future.” Another noted that “it doesn’t get more Superman than this,” highlighting the film’s successful capture of the character’s essential spirit.

Not all responses were uniformly positive, however. Some critics found the film “oddly flat, even juvenile” despite its promising opening tone that hinted at something deeper. One reviewer gave it 6/10, stating it “looks like Superman, but lacks the heart, presence, and impact” and suggesting viewers “revisit Man of Steel” for something more heroic.

Box Office and Future of the DCU

As the first film in the new DC Universe, “Superman” carries significant weight for Warner Bros.’ superhero franchise plans. The film’s performance at the box office will likely influence the direction of future projects in what Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran have outlined as Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

The DCU roadmap already includes several upcoming projects, such as a “Swamp Thing” movie directed by James Mangold and a TV series focused on the Amazons of Themyscira. Both Batman and Wonder Woman, among other heroes, additionally have new films on the way. Though “Superman” does not directly adapt any one storyline, Gunn stated that he drew inspiration from a number of specific comics and adaptations.

The Sequel: Man of Tomorrow

Even before the first film’s release, plans were already underway for a sequel. James Gunn confirmed that he is writing and directing “Superman: Man of Tomorrow,” which will feature several returning cast members from the 2025 film—including David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

As of April 2026, three new characters and cast members have been added to the sequel. In December 2025, Gunn announced that German actor Eidinger was chosen to play the villain Brainiac, described as a “hyper intelligent alien android with a tyrannical thirst for absolute knowledge of the universe.”

A Hopeful Vision for a Divided World

For James Gunn, “Superman” represents more than just a superhero movie—it’s an opportunity to bring hope to what he describes as “our battered world.” “For me, it’s about bringing this character home and bringing our battered world to a brighter place of healing,” says Gunn. “I think that this is the right time for this movie and I just can’t wait for people to see it in July.”

This hopeful vision permeates every aspect of the film, from its vibrant visual style to its emphasis on Superman as a symbol of kindness in a world that often views such qualities as old-fashioned. As one character tells Superman in the film: “You trust everyone and think everyone you’ve ever met is, like, beautiful.” To which Superman replies: “Maybe that’s the real punk rock.”

With its blend of spectacular action, heartfelt storytelling, and a commitment to the character’s core values, “Superman” (2025) stands as both a worthy addition to the character’s cinematic legacy and a promising start to a new era for DC’s heroes on the big screen.
